Joshua Rifkin - one of the most insightful and controversial Bach scholar-performers of our day - offers a characteristically original programme, including a fascinating reconstruction of Bach's early version of the famous Orchestral Suite in B minor, with violin replacing the solo flute; his beguilingly lyrical Italian cantata, 'Non sa che sia dolore' BWV 209, and the sparkling, but seldom-heard, Triple Concerto BWV 1044.

The Bach Ensemble has won international critical acclaim for the verve and depth of its Bach interpretations, as well as a Gramophone Award for its recording of Bach's Mass in B minor. The ensemble's founding director, Joshua Rifkin, is renowned for his performances of music ranging from Bach to Stravinsky and Scott Joplin. A distinguished scholar, he has written path-breaking studies on Baroque music. This concert presents some of the fruits of his research.

Julianne Baird is considered one of the most distinguished sopranos specialising in early music. Her singing has been described as 'artistry of the highest order' (New York Times) and Opera News has said, 'if spring sunlight could be translated into sound, it would probably be a lot like Julianne Baird.' This is a rare chance for British audiences to hear her.
