Bach's music for the lute was largely inspired by his admiration for the great 18th-century lutenist Sylvius Leopold Weiss. This programme includes works by both composers - glorious 'swan songs' of the lute repertory.
American lutenist Robert Barto has been praised for his 'impeccable command, tonal lustre, and an easy grace and flow' (New York Times), and his recording of music by Weiss was greeted as 'some of the finest playing...I have yet heard.' (Gramophone)

Germany's outstanding period-instrument orchestra, Freiburg Baroque, has developed a close musical rapport with British soprano Emma Kirkby. In an all-too-rare UK performance, they offer two of Bach's most ravishing cantatas for solo soprano, 'Mein Herze schwimmt im Blut' BWV 199 and 'Ich habe genug' BWV 82; a reconstruction of the lost Concerto in D minor for oboe and violin, and Bach's original conception of the magisterial Suite No. 4 in D.
